Internship Program

A place to cultivate your skills
and build relationships!

As an intern at Gorove Slade, you’ll dive into the dynamic world of transportation planning and traffic engineering services. Our client-focused approach means you’ll be involved in supporting the public and private sectors, tackling real-world challenges with responsiveness and critical thinking.

You’ll learn from industry leaders who prioritize efficiency, safety, and sustainability in transportation, working to create vibrant, accessible communities. With a focus on mentorship and career exploration, Gorove Slade’s internship program promises valuable learning opportunities and the chance to impact how people move through their environments. Each summer, our intern program brings an intern in every office and focuses on teaching engineering skills, as well as soft skills like time management, organization, networking, and professional development. The internship program includes site visits to see innovative projects Gorove Slade has worked on, a collaborative intern project with a presentation at the end of the summer, and other fun ways for interns to interact with the Gorove Slade team.

What Former Interns Have to Say

“My internship with Gorove Slade has helped me envision what pursuing a career in traffic engineering and planning actually looks like. For example, I gained a lot of insights and skills working on a corridor study for the City of Alexandria, plus I was able to explore a new initiative that WMATA is undertaking. For future interns, know that there will be so many opportunities during your time learning from the wonderful people at Gorove Slade. I encourage you to embrace every one of them!”

“My mentors at Gorove Slade were always available to answer any questions I had. Just as important, they gave the interns autonomy to take the lead on projects, such as the Traffic Impact Study that I contributed to from start to finish. This experience was so rewarding, and it clarified my commitment to pursuing a master’s degree so that I can further specialize in the aspects of transportation engineering I’m most interested in.”

I liked my internship at Gorove Slade so much because I was able to meet nearly everybody across the company. I found it so useful to hear different perspectives, and I could explore new areas of engineering as a result. For example, I enjoy the technical aspects of the work, but I also like how it’s quite policy-oriented and offers meaningful interactions with people in the community.

Before being an intern at Gorove Slade, I didn’t understand all the technical aspects that went into the places I encounter on a day-to-day basis. After doing a CTR report on pedestrian facilities, I started looking at sidewalk lifts while walking down the street and thinking, ‘Does that meet the code I just learned about?’ Similarly, I would look at the number of lanes in a street and wonder about the rationale of two turn lanes versus one. This was a really cool aspect of this internship.
